| 1940 SEASON REVIEW |
The Chicago Cubs fans had little to celebrate during the 1940 season. Chicago finished in last place
52 games behing in the National League. The Cubs were led by young stars second baseman Bobby Doerrr
who batted .291 with 19 home runs and 102 RBI and pitcher Johnny Vander Meer who went 11-14 with a
4.15 ERA. The only bright spot in the Cubs dismal season is that Chicago is a very young team and
some of the players showed the potential to be stas of the future. It is not unimaginable to have the
Cubs be a contending team in a few short years.
While the Cubs may be the team of the future, the 1941 season is probably not the Cubs year. The Cubs
were able to acquire the 1940 Best Pitcher Award winner Dick Errickson and another good pitcher in
Hal Schumacher. This in addition to the Cubs good draft, led by future All-Star Stan Musial, makes the Cubs
poised for a run at a pennant race by possibly the 1942 or 1943 season.
